I still remember sitting in my GP's office, staring at the prescription for prenatal vitamins. Folate, iron, iodine, B12, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D... the list went on and on.
"Why do I need all these supplements?" I asked. "Can't I just eat a healthy, balanced diet?"
My doctor smiled sympathetically. "In theory, yes. But modern food just doesn't contain the nutrients it used to. These vitamins ensure your baby gets everything needed for healthy development."
That conversation changed everything—not just for me and my unborn child, but for how my husband Anthony and I would approach our entire careers in agriculture.
The Question That Started It All
Walking out of that doctor's appointment, one thought kept circling in my mind: If I need all these nutrients to grow a healthy baby, and they're not in our food anymore, where did they go?
The answer, as Anthony explained that evening, was both simple and devastating: they never left—they were never there to begin with. Our modern agricultural system has been depleting soil nutrients for decades, and we're now eating food grown in nutritionally bankrupt soil.
What 30 Years in Agronomy Taught My Husband
Anthony holds a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and has spent over 30 years working with farmers and gardeners across Western Australia. Here's what he's watched happen:
The Commercial Agriculture Reality
1950s-1960s: Soil rich in minerals, diverse microbial life, high organic matter content. Produce contained significantly higher levels of vitamins and minerals.
1970s-1980s: Introduction of synthetic fertilisers that focused solely on NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). Micronutrients ignored. Soil organic matter declining.
1990s-2000s: Soil treated as an inert growing medium. Heavy chemical use. Microbial life declining. Produce testing shows significant nutrient decline compared to decades prior.
2010s-Present: Studies show vegetables contain 20-40% fewer nutrients than the same vegetables tested 50 years ago. Soil health crisis recognized but largely unaddressed in commercial agriculture.
The Numbers Don't Lie
Research comparing USDA nutrient data from 1950 to today shows dramatic declines:
- Vitamin C in broccoli: down 50%
- Calcium in spinach: down 40%
- Iron in watercress: down 75%
- Copper in tomatoes: down 60%
No wonder we need vitamin supplements. The food simply doesn't contain what it used to.

The Penny Drops: Our "Why"
That night, sitting at our kitchen table, the connection became crystal clear to me:
If plants need complete nutrition to be healthy and nutrient-dense, and our soil no longer provides that complete nutrition, then growing our own food with depleted fertilisers is pointless. We'd just be recreating the same problem in our backyard.
I was pregnant. I wanted my child to be healthy. I wanted the food I grew to actually nourish my baby—not just fill their stomach.
But when I looked at what was available for home gardeners, I found the same problem as commercial agriculture: incomplete nutrition focused on quick growth, not genuine health.
The Missing Food Groups
Anthony explained it using an analogy I immediately understood:
"Imagine feeding our baby only protein powder, every day, for their entire childhood. They might grow, but would they be healthy? Would they thrive? Obviously not—they need complete nutrition: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, everything."
"Plants are exactly the same. Most fertilisers are like feeding plants only protein powder. They might grow fast and look green, but they're not genuinely healthy. And if the plant isn't healthy, the food it produces won't be nutritious."
This is when we decided to create something different.
Building the Complete System
Anthony spent months formulating what would become Soil Dynamics' home garden range. His criteria were non-negotiable:
Every "Food Group" Represented
Just like my prenatal vitamins addressed multiple nutritional needs, our fertiliser system had to address soil's multiple nutritional needs:
1. Minerals & Nutrients (Nutrient Rock Star)
The foundation—rock minerals that remineralise depleted soils with 60+ trace elements. This is like the calcium and iron in my prenatal vitamins—foundational to health.
2. Micronutrients (Happy Gut Tonic)
Seaweed concentrate providing trace elements that build immunity and resilience. Like the zinc, selenium, and iodine in my supplements—small amounts but critically important.
3. Proteins & Amino Acids (The Protein Shake)
Fish emulsion delivering the building blocks plants need to create strong tissues and enzymes. Similar to the protein requirements during pregnancy—essential for building new cells.
4. Carbohydrates & Energy (Jurassic Juice)
Potassium humate that feeds soil microbes and builds structure. Like the complex carbohydrates that give pregnant women energy—necessary for function.
5. Calcium & Structural Support (Regenerate Elixir)
Concentrated trace elements with high calcium for strong cell walls. Just like calcium builds strong bones in babies, it creates structural integrity in plants.
6. Complete Energy Package (Growing Goodness)
Organic NPK for heavy feeders needing extra nutrition. Like how some pregnancies need additional supplements—sometimes more is necessary.
7. Soil Structure (Coastal Cure)
For Perth's terrible sandy soils, a product that permanently transforms sand into soil. Creating the right environment for nutrition to work.
Why Certification Was Non-Negotiable
Here's where our story diverges from many fertiliser companies. We could have created products without certification. It would have been cheaper, faster, easier.
But I was pregnant. I was growing a human being inside me. And I was planning to grow food to nourish that human being.
I needed to know—with absolute certainty—that what we put on our soil was safe.
The Southern Cross Certified Decision
We chose to pursue Southern Cross Certified Organic certification (formerly NASAA) for every single product because:
- Third-party verification: Not just our word—independent inspectors verify every claim
- Annual audits: We're inspected every year to maintain standards
- Complete traceability: Every ingredient traced to its certified source
- Safety guarantee: Products safe for children, pets, and the environment
- Transparency: Standards are public and verifiable
This certification process was expensive, time-consuming, and stringent. But it meant I could use our products on our family's food garden without any hesitation.
The First Test Subject: My Baby
By the time our first child was born, Anthony had finalized the formulations and achieved certification. Our home garden became the testing ground.
I used our complete system on everything: vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, even the lawn where our baby would eventually crawl and play.
The results were remarkable:
- Vegetables that actually tasted like vegetables should taste
- Herbs so flavorful we used half the amount in recipes
- Fruit trees producing abundant, sweet fruit
- Most importantly: soil that felt alive, smelled earthy, and supported incredible growth
But the real test was nutritional. When I had my baby's first nutrition panel done at their 12-month checkup, our GP commented on how excellent their nutrient levels were.
"Whatever you're doing, keep doing it," she said.
I was doing exactly what made sense: growing nutrient-dense food from nutrient-complete soil, using our certified organic system.
Why This Matters for Your Family
Every parent wants the best for their children. We want them healthy, strong, resilient. We worry about nutrition, about chemicals in food, about creating a safe environment.
Home gardening seems like the perfect solution—grow your own organic food, control what your family eats, connect with nature.
But here's what most people don't realize: if you use incomplete fertilisers (or worse, synthetic chemicals), you're just recreating commercial agriculture's problems in your backyard.
You might grow food, but is it truly nutritious? Is it genuinely safe? Are you actually improving your family's health, or just going through the motions?
The Complete Nutrition Difference
When you use our certified organic system with all "food groups" represented:
For Your Plants:
- Genuine health, not just fast growth
- Natural pest and disease resistance
- Nutrient-dense food production
- Resilience to environmental stress
For Your Soil:
- Building microbial life
- Improving structure and water retention
- Increasing organic matter
- Creating a living ecosystem
For Your Family:
- Genuinely nutritious food
- Safe play spaces for children
- No chemical exposure concerns
- Food you can feel good about eating
The Questions I Had (That You Probably Have Too)
"Isn't this more expensive than regular fertiliser?"
Yes, our certified organic products cost more than synthetic alternatives. But consider:
- What's the cost of vitamin supplements to make up nutritional gaps?
- What's the value of knowing your children are safe?
- What's worth the peace of mind about your family's food?
- What's the long-term cost of damaged soil health?
For us, the answer was clear: our family's health is worth the investment.
"Do I really need all seven products?"
Most home gardens do well with the Foundation Bundle (five core products). Heavy feeders like vegetables might need Growing Goodness. Sandy Perth soils might need Coastal Cure or regular Jurassic Juice.
The question isn't "do I need this," but "what does my soil need to be truly complete?"
Think about those prenatal vitamins. Did I "need" all of them? Maybe my baby would have been "fine" with just iron and folate. But why take the risk? Why settle for "fine" when you can have "genuinely healthy"?
"Isn't this complicated?"
It seems complicated written out, but in practice it's simple:
- Weekly liquid rotation (takes less time than watching TV)
- Quarterly granular applications
- That's it
We provide a complete guide, a calculator, and free access to our Organic Gardening Course with every purchase. Plus, you can always contact us with questions.
If I could manage this system while pregnant, dealing with morning sickness, and later with a newborn, you can manage it too.

What We've Built Together
Soil Dynamics started because of a GP appointment and a pregnancy. It grew because we realized other families had the same questions and concerns we did.
Today, thousands of Australian families use our certified organic system to grow genuinely nutritious food. We hear stories about:
- Kids who finally eat vegetables (because they actually taste good)
- Families reducing grocery bills while improving nutrition
- Parents feeling confident about their children's food
- Gardens thriving in ways they never did with synthetic fertilisers
But what makes me proudest is knowing that we're helping families create the same nutritional foundation for their children that I wanted for mine.
Your Turn: What Will You Choose?
You have a choice in how you garden. You can:
Option 1: Use quick-fix synthetic fertilisers that might make plants green but don't build genuine health or nutrition.
Option 2: Use uncertified "organic" products with unknown ingredients and no verification of safety or effectiveness.
Option 3: Use our Southern Cross Certified complete system, developed by a qualified agronomist and tested on our own family's food garden.
I chose Option 3 for my family. I choose it every day, every season, every year.

From Our Family to Yours
That GP appointment was seven years ago now. The baby I was growing is now a thriving child who loves helping in our garden, eating vegetables straight from the plant, and learning about where food comes from.
They're growing up with soil under their fingernails, the taste of genuinely nutritious food, and the knowledge that caring for soil means caring for ourselves.
That's the world we're building, one garden at a time.
