How to Fertilise a Vegetable Garden Organically | Australian Guide
Organic vegetable garden care: preparation & ongoing feeding
This guide outlines organic fertiliser application rates for vegetable gardens and flower beds under Australian conditions. It covers soil preparation, planting, ongoing feeding through growth and flowering, and targeted nutrition strategies to support healthy soil biology, strong root development, and nutrient-dense produce using Soil Dynamics organic products.
Prepare a Garden Bed
Pro tip: If you have sandy soil add our Coastal Cure before planting this is a super important step for fixing hydrophobic soil long term.
Pro Benefit: Why are our products priced higher? They're commercial grade, certified organic, and 5x more concentrated than most products on the market. This means they actually work out cheaper - one 9 litre watering can covers 8-10 sqm versus the 2-4 sqm coverage of typical products. You use less and get more coverage and save time
You can’t overdo it with our products, so there’s no need to be overly precise when measuring. All liquid products can be mixed, just don’t leave them premixed, as some inputs may settle at the bottom of the watering can.
Soil Preparation and base Nutrition
Step 1: Upfront soil preparation
- Incorporate 1-2 heaped handfuls ( approx 250g per sqm ) of Nutrient Rock Star into the soil 50 – 100 mm ( if possible add some quality compost ( if you are uncertain if your compost is mature wait 1 -2 weeks for it to fully compost to prevent burn) - you are now ready to plant
- If you are planting root veggies, include the Growing Goodness at same rate as the Nutrient Rock Star
Step 2: At Planting
- Water in well with Happy Gut Tonic
(20–40 ml per 9 L watering can – covers approx. 10 sqm) - Water off any residue on foliage to prevent sunburn
- Happy Gut Tonic stimulates early root development for stronger, tougher plants
Step 3: Two weeks after planting
- Apply The Protein Shake (100% pure fish)
- 1st application: 180 ml per 9 L
- 2nd application: 90 ml
- Maintenance: 45–65 ml
- Water off residue
- This drives healthy vegetative growth
Step 4: Ongoing establishment feeding
- Alternate Happy Gut Tonic and The Protein Shake weekly as a soil drench or foliar spray
- Products can be mixed if required (may fizz slightly — this is normal
Step 5: Microbial and mineral support
-
Apply and alternate every third week:
- Jurassic Juice: 20 ml
- Regenerate Elixir: 20–40 ml
Step 6: Mid -growth and flowering stage
- At mid-growth for leafy greens, or first flower for fruiting plants (tomatoes, peas, etc.):
- Apply Nutrient Rock Star as a light top dress around the base of plants
- Sprinkle Growing Goodness at the same time
- Must be watered in
- Can be timed with liquid feeding to save water (optional)
Step 8 : Ongoing liquid feeding routine
- Continue weekly alternation of Happy Gut Tonic and The Protein Shake
- Every third week, alternate Jurassic Juice and Regenerate Elixir
Step 9: Second growth, flowering or at ripening for edibles
- Apply another light top dress of Nutrient Rock Star
- Supports mineral transfer into fruit development and improves nutrient density of your produce
Step 10: End of crop Nutrition
- Use Regenerate Elixir toward crop maturity to drive calcium and trace elements
Organic Fertiliser rates for existing garden beds
Pro Tip (Hydrophobic soils) :
If dealing with hydrophobic soil, apply an upfront addition of Nutrient Rock Star. Then apply Jurassic Juice weekly at 50–100 ml per 9 L for 6 weeks, then reduce to fortnightly until improvement is visible. In summer heat, return to fortnightly if required
Follow the steps above, replacing the incorporation of Nutrient Rock Star with a top dress applied around the base of plants and watered in well.
